Introduction
Purpose
This guide provides a detailed walkthrough for leveling a Necromancer through Path of Exile's 10-act campaign. Minion builds are an excellent choice for new players because they offer a forgiving playstyle where your summons do most of the damage while you focus on positioning and survival.
The guide transitions through several skills as you level: starting with self-cast spells, then moving to Summon Raging Spirit (SRS), and finally settling on Absolution as your main skill around level 12. By the end of Act 10, you'll have a solid foundation to transition into any minion-focused endgame build.
What makes this approach effective is that it teaches you minion mechanics progressively, doesn't require specific gear to function, and allows you to learn the campaign at your own pace without complex mechanics to manage.
When to Use This Guide
Best For:
- ✅ First-time players wanting a safe, effective leveling experience
- ✅ Players new to minion builds who want to understand the mechanics
- ✅ Anyone looking for a structured, act-by-act progression path
- ✅ League starters who want a smooth campaign experience
Not Ideal For:
- ❌ Experienced players doing speed runs (this guide prioritizes learning over speed)
- ❌ Players wanting to use specific unique items (we focus on accessible gear)
- ❌ Those looking for alternative minion builds like spectres or golems

Section 1:
Core Concepts & Philosophy
Overview
Understanding the fundamentals of how minion builds work will make your leveling experience much smoother.
Key Concepts
Concept 1: Minions Do The Work Your job as a Necromancer is not to deal damage directly. Instead, you:
- Summon and maintain your minions
- Position yourself safely
- Use Flesh/Bone Offering to buff minions
- Apply curses to increase damage
- Avoid dangerous ground effects
Concept 2: Minimal Gear Requirements Unlike many builds, minion builds need very few specific stats on gear during the campaign:
- Priority 1: Life
- Priority 2: Elemental Resistances
- Priority 3: Attributes (Strength, Dexterity, Intelligence)
- Bonus: +1 to minion gem levels (wands, shields, helmets)
You do NOT need minion damage modifiers, minion life, or other specific minion stats. These are nice bonuses but not required.
Concept 3: Progressive Skill Transitions You won't have access to good minions immediately. The leveling progression is:
- Levels 1-8: Self-cast spells (Fireball → Rolling Magma)
- Levels 8-12: Summon Raging Spirit (SRS)
- Levels 12+: Absolution (main skill through endgame)
Getting Started
Step 1: Install Path of Building
- Download from https://pathofbuilding.community/
- Import build code: https://pobb.in/8-9u-rZYxc0a
- Reference this for passive tree progression
Step 2: Understand Socket Colors Gems require specific socket colors:
- Blue (Intelligence): Most minion gems and supports
- Red (Strength): Melee supports, some offerings
- Green (Dexterity): Movement skills, some utility
Look for items with BBR (Blue-Blue-Red) or BBBR links as you progress.
Step 3: Manage Your Expectations
- Acts 1-2 can feel slow while waiting for minions
- Mudflats in Act 1 is notoriously difficult (charging Rhoas)
- The build gets significantly better around level 12
- Death is normal while learning - don't be discouraged
Section 2:
Act 1 - Getting Started

- Use Crafting Bench: Add resistances to gear with open suffixes
- Why it matters: Game assumes you have 75% resistance cap
Resistance Math:
- With 75% resistance: 1000 damage → 250 damage taken

- You take DOUBLE damage at 50% vs 75%
What to do after Kitava:

- Build feels strong and smooth

Later Acts (8-10):
- More complex zone layouts
- Higher incoming damage (resistance caps matter!)
- Second Kitava penalty requires gear attention
After Optimization:
- Subsequent characters: 6-8 hours
- With leveling gear: 5-7 hours
- Veteran players: 4-5 hours
Tips & Best Practices
Do's ✅
- ✅ Keep Resistances Capped: Use crafting bench frequently to maintain 75% resistance
- ✅ Update Flasks: Replace life flasks every few acts for appropriate level
- ✅ Check Vendors: They refresh inventory when you level - look for linked items
- ✅ Complete All Trials: Needed for Labyrinth progression
- ✅ Use Portal Scrolls: Don't walk back - portal to town, use waypoints
- ✅ Socket Gems to Level: Use secondary weapon set (press X) to level extra gems
- ✅ Read Quest Rewards: Don't skip - many give skill points
Don'ts ❌
- ❌ Don't Ignore Resistances: Biggest mistake new players make, leads to constant deaths
- ❌ Don't Skip Side Quests with Skill Points: These are mandatory for build power
- ❌ Don't Over-Level Clarity: Keep it low to avoid mana reservation issues
- ❌ Don't Level Desecrate: Keep at level 1, it's only for spawning corpses
- ❌ Don't Skip Crafting Bench: It's extremely powerful and free to use
- ❌ Don't Rush Labyrinth Without Prep: Bring proper flasks and capped resistances
- ❌ Don't Fight Kitava Without Resistance Buffer: You'll be undergeared for next act
Pro Tips
💡 Shield Charge + Convocation: Advanced players Shield Charge ahead, then use Convocation to pull minions forward. Speeds up leveling significantly.
💡 Wisdom Scroll Farming: Sell identified items (especially with RGB linked sockets) to vendors for extra currency.
💡 Flask Crafting: Use Orbs of Transmutation and Alteration on utility flasks to roll anti-freeze, anti-bleed, or anti-curse mods.
💡 Act 9 Blood Aqueducts: If you feel undergeared, this zone is linear and easy to farm for levels and items before fighting Kitava.
💡 Trigger Wand Timing: Get this in Act 9 as soon as possible - quality of life improvement is massive.
💡 Gem Quality: After campaign, start saving Gemcutter's Prisms to quality your main gems to 20% (significant damage boost).
Troubleshooting & Common Issues
Common Problems
Problem 1: Dying Constantly in Early Acts
- Symptoms: Frequent deaths, especially to rare/magic enemies
- Causes:
- Not enough life on gear
- Resistances too low
- Standing in dangerous ground effects
- Solution:
- Prioritize life rolls on gear
- Use crafting bench for resistances
- Keep moving, don't stand still
- Prevention: Check life pool every few levels, should increase by 100+ per act
Problem 2: Running Out of Mana
- Symptoms: Can't cast Absolution, constantly out of mana
- Causes:
- Too many auras reserved
- Clarity level too high
- Don't have Eldritch Battery yet
- Solution:
- Unsocket Skitterbots temporarily
- Lower Clarity level or unsocket it
- Add mana flask (before Eldritch Battery)
- Check PoB for when to take Eldritch Battery
- Prevention: Only run auras you can sustain, add Energy Shield gear for Eldritch Battery
Problem 3: Minions Die Too Quickly
- Symptoms: Zombies constantly dying, Absolution Sentinels vanish fast
- Causes:
- Missing Minion Life Support on zombies
- Not using offerings
- Undergeared for current act
- Solution:
- Link Raise Zombie + Minion Life + Feeding Frenzy
- Ensure trigger wand is casting offerings
- Resummon zombies with Desecrate corpses
- Prevention: Keep Raise Zombie and supports leveled up, use offerings on cooldown
Problem 4: Can't Find Socket Colors Needed
- Symptoms: Have gems but no items with right colored sockets
- Causes:
- RNG on drops
- Not checking vendors
- Wearing wrong armor type (armor = red, evasion = green, energy shield = blue)
- Solution:
- Check all vendors every level
- Use Chromatic Orbs to recolor sockets
- Wear hybrid armor (Armor/ES for BBR sockets)
- Ask in global chat if desperate
- Prevention: Look for hybrid armor bases, save Chromatic Orbs
Problem 5: Lost in Complex Zones (Vaal City, Act 8)
- Symptoms: Going in circles, can't find exit
- Causes: Zone layouts are complex and confusing
- Solution:
- Pull up Act map guide (provided in this guide)
- Follow general directions (stick to walls)
- Take breaks if frustrated
- Ask in global chat for tips
- Prevention: Reference zone maps in guide, be patient
Problem 6: Labyrinth Traps Keep Killing Me
- Symptoms: Dying to traps, not Izaro
- Causes:
- Panicking and double-backing into traps
- Not watching trap patterns
- Running too fast
- Solution:
- Slow down and observe trap patterns
- Move deliberately through trap sections
- Use life flasks between trap sections
- Can resummon minions after trap sections
- Prevention: Practice patience, don't rush, watch for trap activation patterns
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Do I need specific unique items to level as Necromancer? A: No! This build is designed to work with any rare gear that has life and resistances. Unique items like Tabula Rasa or Goldrim are nice bonuses but not required.
Q: When should I do Labyrinth runs? A:
- First Lab: After Act 3, during Act 4 (level 33+)
- Second Lab: After Act 7 (level 55+)
- Third Lab: After Act 10, BEFORE final Kitava (level 68+)
- Uber Lab: In maps, level 75+ recommended
Q: Can I skip the side quests in Act 6? A: No! The Twilight Strand unlocks Lilly Roth (essential vendor), and the Wetlands + Valley quests give skill points. These are mandatory.
Q: Should I pick up all rare items? A: No. Only pick up:
- Items with good bases (hybrid armor for BBR sockets)
- Rings/amulets/belts (small, worth checking)
- Rares if your gear needs upgrade
- Chromatic items (R-G-B linked = 1 Chromatic Orb from vendor)
Q: What do I do if I run out of Portal Scrolls? A:
- Sell Wisdom Scrolls to vendor (3:1 ratio)
- Pick up Scrolls of Wisdom and trade them
- Sell Transmutation Orbs for Portal Scrolls
- They drop commonly, shouldn't be an issue
Q: Is Absolution good for endgame or should I respec? A: Absolution is viable for endgame! You can continue with it or transition to other minion builds. Most minion builds share 80%+ of the passive tree, so respec cost is minimal.
Q: How do I get more links on gear? A:
- Find items with more sockets
- Use Orb of Fusing on items with 4+ sockets (chance to link)
- Buy Tabula Rasa for guaranteed 6-link (10 chaos, no stats)
- In endgame, farm currency to buy 6-link armor
Q: What's the difference between Flesh Offering and Bone Offering? A:
- Flesh Offering: Increases minion attack/cast speed (offensive)
- Bone Offering: Grants block chance to minions and you (defensive)
- Use Flesh while leveling, swap to Bone after third Lab
Q: Do I need to trade for anything during leveling? A: No! Everything can be self-found. Trading for +1 minion wand or Tabula is optional for faster/smoother leveling.
